Birth Control

Birth control, also known as contraception, is a way for people to prevent pregnancy. If you are trying to choose a method of contraception, you should research what would best suit your needs.

A few methods of birth control are birth control pill, abstinence, condom, diaphragm, IUD and withdrawal. Of course the best option out of those would be abstinence as it not only prevents unwanted pregnancies, but STDs as well.

What birth control method should I choose?

Depending on what kind of lifestyle you lead, the best option for you may vary. A few things you need to ask yourself are:

- Do you want to use birth control every day?

- How many times do you have sex? Is it worthwhile going on the pill?

- Is it affordable?

- Is it safe?

- Can the effects be easily reversed later if you decide to have children?

- Will it prevent STDs?

- What are the side effects?

- What are the pros and cons?

It is always a good idea to consult your doctor about all the birth control methods and they may be able to help you pick out a suitable one for you.

What is an emergency contraceptive?

If you have had unprotected sex, the condom broke or forgot to take your birth control pill, the morning after pill is available from your chemist. The morning after pill works by thickening a woman's cervical mucus and the mucus stops the sperm from going to the egg. The earlier you take the morning after pill the more effective it is. The morning after pill does not protect against STDs. Some common side effects of taking the morning after pill are nausea, breast tenderness, irregular bleeding and headaches. The morning after pill is not meant to be used as an ongoing birth control method.

How long before I can get pregnant after taking hormonal contraceptives?

It may take a while for your body to adjust back to a regular menstrual cycle. It varies on the individual but for some women it can happen straight away while others can take up to a year. If you're trying to conceive, it maybe be a good idea to wait a few months while your body adjusts back to it's normal cycle so you can deal with your pregnancy better.
