Contraception is also known as birth control. Dictionary.com's definition of contraception is "intentional prevention of conception or impregnation through the use of various devices, agents, drugs, sexual practices or surgical procedures."
There are numerous methods of contraception. The most effective being abstinence (no sex) as it protects you against STDs and unwanted pregnancies. A few others are the pill, birth control patch, condom, diaphragm and IUD (Intrauterine device).
What birth control method would best suit me?
Because there are so many different types of contraception available, you will probably have to try several different methods to find the one that suits you the most. Although the pill is the most commonly used along with condoms, other contraception methods are also used. It is always a good idea to consult your doctor about all the birth control methods and they may be able to help you pick out a suitable one for you. You should consult your doctor and talk about it with them thoroughly about your best options.

Most methods of contraception are quite safe and effective even though not all of them will protect you from STDs. The least effective method of contraception is the 'withdrawal' method as a bit of sperm may have already been ejaculated before climax.

Some contraceptives require a prescription so you will need to see a doctor or healthcare clinic and they will see if you are suitable for the kind of contraceptive. The doctor should do a quick assessment to see whether that type of contraceptive is suitable for you. Condoms are available from pharmacies, supermarket, family planning clinics and some service stations.
As you get older you will most likely need to change the kind of contraception you use to suit your new lifestyle for example if you want to start having children, if you don't want to children. Remember that condoms are the only contraception that helps protect you against STDs.
