Types of Birth Control

There are many different types of birth control’s available in today’s day and age. Which one you take will depend on your budget, personal preference and whether you think you can remember to take a pill every day or not.

What birth control type will suit me?

The most reliable birth control types at the moment are birth control pills, implants, IUDs and sterilization and condoms.

What birth control type can I use without a prescription?

You can buy condoms for men, female condom and a spermicidal. You can get the above in drugstores however you can purchase condoms from supermarkets and many other places.

What birth control type do I need to see my doctor for?

Diaphragm &n- Diaphragms with a spermicide inside the dome of the diaphragm is put inside the vagina before sex so that it covers the cervix. Diaphragms come in different sizes so you will need to be fitted for it.

Cervical cap &n- A cervical cap is a soft rubber cup with a round rim that is put into the vagina over the cervix. You must also go to the doctor to be fitted with a cervical cap and it must also be used with a spermicide.

Birth control pills &n- You need a prescription to get birth control pills. There are two types of birth control pills: Combined oral contraceptives and minipills. Combined oral contraceptives consist of the two hormones estrogen and progestin. Together they stop the ovaries releasing an egg and this pill must be taken every day. Minipills only contain progestin and thicken the cervical mucus to stop the sperm reaching the egg.

Depo Provera &n- This is injected into a woman’s buttocks or arm muscle by a medical professional. This needs to be done every three months.

IUDs &n&n- An IUD (Intra&n&n-Uterine Device) is inserted into the womb. There are two types of IUDs available. An IUD can only be inserted and removed by a medical professional.

Female sterilization &n- This is normally done under general anesthesia. This procedure involves tying, cutting or blocking the fallopian tubes so eggs cannot reach the womb.

Male sterilization &n- This procedure is also called a Vasectomy. The tube from which sperm goes to the penis from the testicles, if either sealed, tied or cut. This procedure is also done under local anesthesia.

Birth control patch &n&n- This is a small patch that sticks to your skin to prevent pregnancy. The birth control patch works with a combination of the hormones that prevents a woman from ovulating.
